The Curse is Broken…Not Me

Chlarissa is a Senior Project Manager and Entrepreneur who has worked tirelessly to overcome teenage parenthood, poverty, domestic violence, and other generational curses that plagued her life.

She was the first in her family to earn a four-year degree while earning a total of three degrees, several professional certifications, an admirable corporate career, and three successful businesses.

However, nothing ever seemed to be good enough, not only for her but for the people with whom she surrounded herself. She noticed that she went from priding herself on her appearance to making self-care an afterthought.

She realized that she focused more on making the people around her happy than she was on her own inner peace.

Through hard, life-altering, and soul-stirring lessons, she learned that while trying to make a difference within her sphere of influence and being a conqueror of curses was admirable; she also needed to know how to say “f* it” and walk away.

She had to decide what it meant to be truly free. Sometimes the curse that needs to be broken is the belief that all curses are yours to bear. Sometimes you have to look within.

Are you owning the curse, or is the curse owning you?

The author humorously categorizes different types of family “villains” based on various life experiences, such as the Travel Villain, who would rather deal with sand in their ass versus a pain in their ass, and the Peace Villain, who will lose their shit to keep their peace. Other categories include the Alienated Villain, Black Sheep Villain, Scape Goat Villain, and more, each representing different struggles and the journey towards self-acceptance and empowerment.

The book delves into the emotional journey of trying to exist, let alone thrive, within draining family structures. It highlights the need to create space for oneself while letting go of toxic relationships, situationships, and environments that hinder personal growth and happiness. It emphasizes the importance of focusing on personal acceptance rather than seeking external validation or understanding from those who refuse to elevate and grow.

This piece is a powerful reminder to prioritize self-care, boundaries, and healing, with or without the people you started with. It gives the reader permission to surround oneself with a supportive, like-minded, self-selected tribe while being ok with being the villain in someone else’s story.
